Butterfly-shaped Lake Ermal was formed in the 1930s with the building of a dam near Guilhofrei. A place of tranquility and beauty, it has many lovely walks and beaches during the summer as the water level goes down. There is also a Telesky, with a beach and cafe, well worth a visit.

The surrounding hills are full of character, with wild horses and goats, and interesting 4x4 trails.

There are ancient churches tucked away among the hills, and in odd corners you may find remnants of the ancient Romans, who made nearby Braga their centre in Portugal.
